Area of Practice

Joseph Pawlick began his career in Chicago, representing both labor organizations and multiemployer fringe benefit funds. After six years in the Windy City, he returned home to Michigan and joined Sachs Waldman in 2009 where his practice has been devoted to exclusively representing multiemployer (Taft-Hartley) funds. He became a shareholder in the firm in 2011.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is perhaps the most significant piece of legislation impacting health and welfare funds since the passage of ERISA in 1974. Although multiemployer funds were largely ignored in the drafting of the statute and have continued to be neglected in its implementing regulations, Mr. Pawlick has distinguished himself as an expert on the impacts of health care reform on multiemployer plans and has helped navigate his clients through the seemingly perpetual uncertainty, blending pragmatic and creative problem-solving tactics.

In addition to his work for health and welfare funds, Mr. Pawlick counsels multiemployer defined benefit pension funds, defined contribution profit sharing funds, apprenticeship funds, supplemental unemployment benefits funds, and vacation and holiday funds in all respects from plan design and compliance, to benefit claims and other individual participant matters, to negotiating service provider contracts and reviewing governmental filings.

Mr. Pawlick is a graduate of the University of Michigan (2002, B.A., Economics) and the DePaul University College of Law (2006, J.D.). He is licensed to practice in the States of Michigan, Ohio and Illinois, and also admitted to practice before numerous Federal courts.
